The Thiel Foundation’s Breakout Labs fund welcomed New Mexico-based UbiQD (Ubiquitous Quantum Dots), Inc., to their portfolio of companies via an announcement on October 16th. UbiQD’s nanocomposites and cadmium-free quantum dots allow windows to generate their own electricity, and the venture has secured $350,000 from Breakout Labs to further refine the technologies.

Breakout Labs is a fund in the Thiel Foundation that fuels the growth and development of early-stage science-based companies like UbiQD, awarding funding and giving access to corporate partners, follow-on funders, and the resources needed to drive future commercialization. UbiQD, benefitting from recent funding, is developing their quantum dot technology that is commonly used for converting one spectrum of light into another, and for solar energy as part of a greenhouse project.

“I would like to offer my sincerest thanks for Breakout Labs’ support, which will be transformative for UbiQD,” said UbiQD’s CEO and founder Hunter McDaniel, PhD., talking about the support in a press release. “Breakout Labs recognizes our tremendous potential in the agricultural industry and their funding demonstrates a level of confidence and commitment to our success.”
