On September 28th New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) continues its annual TEDx talks event with a special guest this year: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. TEDx are Independent-run events offering short “powerful talks” delivered by a slate of speakers on topics chosen by event organizers. This year’s talk will explore the theme of “Innovation and Collaboration.”

To be held on the NJIT Newark based campus in the Jim Wise Theatre, the event brings together leaders from the fields of art, business, and academics. Going with the theme of “Innovation and Collaboration”, the event is engaging the local community, tapping into a range of community contributors and leaders.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is headlining the roster of speakers: Gerard Adams, known as The Millennial Mentor™ and co-founder of Fownders: Dr. Tara Alvarez, NJIT professor of biomedical engineering who works on vision related research; entrepreneur Ron Gold founder of LeanOnWe a startup company that focuses on delivering improved home care experience at a more affordable price; Newark creative entrepreneur Medina founder of Medina=Citi; NJIT Professor David Rothenberg; NJIT student Kabir Mitra  and  local musician Matthew  Aidekman who will explore and perform new types of music; Mark Scotland, CEO of 4.0 Analytics who will discuss a revolutionary vehicle emission technology being developed and tested in Newark to benefit the city’s environment; Donald Sebastian, president of the New Jersey Innovation Institute who will discuss collaboration in today’s environment; and Emma Wilcox co-founder of Gallery Aferro in Newark.

“We have put together an outstanding array of visionary thinkers to discuss topics of interest to everyone, as we all try individually to make the world a better place,” says Judith Sheft, associate vice president for technology and enterprise development at NJIT and a co-organizer for the event.

The event is open to students and faculty of NJIT and also open to students and faculty of nearby universities including Rutgers University, Essex County College, Berkeley College, and Seton Hall University. The tickets cost $30 for public attendees and NJIT alumni, staff and faculty and $15 for students. Food and drink will offered at the event as part of the admission.
