A broad movement of developers led to a 10x year over year revenue increase
The AI race is in full throttle, with entrepreneurs innovating to join this new highly competitive tech arena. Count-in New Jersey-based RunPod, being the first cloud provider for AI applications.
The company’s AI cloud platform enables developers to seamlessly deploy custom full-stack AI applications. Since its launch, developers have moved swiftly to take advantage of the new capabilities, causing RunPod’s revenue to surge.
The two plus year-old tech startup also caught the eye of tech giants Intel and Dell. The two companies’ funding arms, Intel Capital and Dell Technologies Capital, co-led RunPod’s timely $20M seed round. Notable individual investors also joined, including Julien Chaummond, co-founder and CTO of Hugging Face, former CEO of GitHub Nat Friedman, and Adam Lewis, Managing Director at DH Capital.
Both CEO Zhen Lu and co-founder CTO Pardeep Singh worked at Comcast. Lu served as Software Engineering Manager and Singh as Senior Software Engineer. Together they leveraged their extensive development experience to solve a major pain point for AI developers.
“RunPod started as a playground for developers and innovators, a place where they went to do their research, develop, and finetune their projects; now, it boasts a community of over 100K developers,” said Lu. “We’ve grown so quickly because RunPod strikes the perfect balance between providing developers with the freedom to launch whatever they want, while still having the necessary infrastructure and tools in place to assist in the customization, development, and deployment of differentiated products.”
Lu and Singh saw a great opportunity. The emergence of AI-specific workloads was increasing computational demands that existing out-of-the-box cloud infrastructure platforms could not fully support—being cost-ineffective or too slow in creating custom-differentiated products. With the introduction of RunPod’s AI service offering, developers can “reliably and simply develop, train, scale, and launch custom full-stack AI applications or integrations in the cloud on a global scale.”
RunPod’s two core products, GPU Cloud and Serverless, enable developers to seamlessly run any GPU workload with less focus on machine learning operations and more on application development
With the influx of developers from across industries and around the globe, seed funding became paramount. The completed round will enable the RunPod team to accelerate the startup’s growth, pursuing new partnerships and integrations for seamless user experiences. The company is committed to providing new and existing customers with an optimal environment to develop custom AI models.
“As the enterprise deploys more AI applications into production, the key to their success is access to fast, reliable, and scalable infrastructure. This is what Zhen, Pardeep, and the team have built with the RunPod platform,” said Radhika Malik, Partner at Dell Technologies Capital. “They are committed to keeping the dev experience central to everything they do. That’s resulted in overwhelmingly positive sentiment from the community and impressive, sustained user growth.”
