The Portfolia FemTech Fund closed with a total of 249 investors, making it the largest venture fund in history based on its investing members. The fund is also the first in the U.S. to invest into women’s health companies only, and it’s the first venture group reported to take advantage of recent legislation that increases the number of allowable investors by 2.5 times.
FemTech uses a scalable model, leveraging Portfolia’s Lead Investor team of domain experts around the country, who make investing in entrepreneurial companies engaging and accessible in the company’s signature “learn by doing” approach. The fund’s first investment is in Future Family, a FemTech startup helping families navigate and afford fertility services.
“The Portfolia team is impressive and stood out for really understanding the market opportunity in the fertility space. As a female CEO running a company where women make up the majority of our customers, having female investors backing us with their capital and their network is incredible,” said Future Family CEO, Claire Tomkins. “I believe the Portfolia network of investors will be powerful in helping us scale the business.”
Portfolia is already looking to the future with the success of the FemTech Fund, with a planned general fund called the FirstStep Fund offering community development and education for first-time investors. Their current plans are to launch 6 more funds by the end of 2019, and to activate at least 100,000 women investing through other financial service products by 2022.
