“When I was stuck in a current swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco. What are you going to do in that moment? When it gets rough and you get pushed down toward the Golden Gate Bridge are you going to grab onto the kayak and look for a rescue line or are you going to figure it out? ”

“The rough times are when you really figure out what you guys are made of and how real the partnership is. We did go through our ups and downs. Building a business is challenging, especially when we didn’t have a playbook and we were figuring things out as we were going and we were also learning how to work together.”

"From those types of challenges I became very inquisitive. We looked at what patients wanted—less pain, fast recovery, better motion—and started developing minimally invasive implants to repair tissues and ligaments, then a whole minimally invasive approach to total knees, then robotics systems, and now artificial intelligence and how to enhance this. I basically took that and said I have an obligation to improve the quality of medicine."
