Seasoned entrepreneurs partnered to launch an AI-agentic platform that will bring disruptive efficiencies to the construction industry, having gained strong investor support for its next stage of growth.
PermitFlow, a leading AI platform for the construction industry, has closed a $54 million Series B funding round led by Accel, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Felicis, Initialized Capital, Altos Ventures, Y Combinator, and existing investors.
The funding will help PermitFlow advance its mission to automate complex pre-construction workflows and provide builders with a faster, more predictable path from planning to completion. Builders can apply for and manage permits, simplifying and accelerating construction while countering delays caused by regulatory and administrative inefficiencies.
The four-year-old startup touts clients that include residential homebuilders, contractors, commercial developers, and renewable energy firms. PermitFlow helps teams reduce approval times by half, enabling faster project starts.
Since its founding in 2021 in New York City by Francis Thumpasery and Samuel Lam, PermitFlow has supported over $20 billion in construction value nationwide. Thumpasery, a Stanford University Graduate School of Business graduate, previously held investor positions, consulted at McKinsey & Company, and co-founded a Medical diagnostic workflow software company.
Lam, a computer science and statistics graduate of Harvard University, was previously an engineer at Uber and co-founder and CTO of NXTFactor, an international digital marketing and development agency.
AI: Unblocking the Path to Groundbreaking
PermitFlow’s proprietary AI agents manage each phase from design and planning to regulatory approvals for clients like Lennar, Amazon, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Builders’ project timelines are shortened by up to 60%, administrative workloads are reduced by 90%, and a fivefold return on investment is achieved. PermitFlow’s proprietary dataset of over 12 million municipal data points powers its platform, training its AI agents and automation models for accuracy and speed across various regulatory environments.
“Builders are the backbone of America. They put families in homes, build critical infrastructure, and shape our communities. Yet the systems behind that progress are decades old,” said Francis Thumpasery, Co-Founder & CEO of PermitFlow. “We’re changing that by bringing AI to construction and empowering builders to build without barriers.”
Accelerating Product and Workforce Expansion
The $54 million in new capital will accelerate product development across PermitFlow’s suite of AI agents for use in permitting, inspections, and contractor license management.
The company also plans to expand its team by hiring engineering and product talent from leading technology firms to meet growing demand from builders nationwide.
The company’s vision is to make pre-construction seamless, enabling builders to start projects faster and with confidence.
Vas Natarajan, Partner at Accel, shared his firm’s conviction in PermitFlow’s approach: “As infrastructure and housing projects accelerate globally, there’s so much compliance, regulatory and legal overhead to manage. PermitFlow entirely redefines that complex, time-consuming work with AI. We’ve been impressed by the team’s clarity of vision and are glad to be part of their journey.”
