The 31 recipients of the 2018 Linux Foundation Training (LiFT) Scholarships have been announced. Picked from over 900 applicants across nine categories, these talented innovators show the potential for greatness in the open source community. Hailing from 21 different countries across the globe, these awards and their recipients reflect the global interest in open-source technology.
Whether it’s a novice or a seasoned professional in the field, the scholarships support the ambitions and ideas of innovators and entrepreneurs anywhere. Since 2010, 106 scholarships totaling over $220,000 have been awarded by the Linux Foundation through LiFT. These scholarships give technical training to people that may not have the opportunity to attain it otherwise.
One of these award winners is Rachael Nelson, from the United States. At 37 years old and holding a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Texas Tech University, she is one of two winners in the “Developer Do-Gooders” category. With the scholarship money, Rachael plans to leverage open-source technologies to add affordable protection to the interests and freedoms of her community.
“With the LiFT scholarship program, we strive to select a cohort of individuals that represent the future of software development and those who will utilize this opportunity to give back to not only the broader open source community, but also their local communities,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. “Scholarship programs such as LiFT showcase the unlimited opportunities a single person can unlock for themselves and other aspiring developers when given access to do so.”
