The Home Depot in partnership with Current recently announced the expansion of its rooftop solar energy program, with 20 stores in New Jersey receiving installations as well as 10 others in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Connecticut. The program entails installation of approximately 30,000 rooftop solar panels that will result in a reduction in electricity grid demand by around 30-35%. This effort is part of Home Depot’s larger energy initiative.
Current’s General Manager of Solar, Erik Schiemann, talked about his thoughts on the partnership in a press release, saying that, “Home Depot is a great partner to demonstrate the value of onsite solar energy as a practical, affordable and important business strategy, and drive further market adoption. We are now beginning to leverage digital technology to collect data that will help our customers become even more efficient.”
Founded as a startup within GE, Current leverages advanced energy technologies like LED and solar to improve the productivity and energy efficiency in commercial and industrial structures. Through the use of integrated sensor technology in solar panels that collects data on weather tracking, grid interaction, and plant production, long-term energy usage in locations such as Home Depot locations is optimized.
Home Depot’s energy initiative includes future plans for fuel cells and wind farm technology that continue to increase the company’s renewable energy footprint.
