The Global Challenges Foundation is accepting applications from individuals of all backgrounds for their Global Challenges Prize 2017 through September 30th. The contest seeks frameworks and models for international cooperation to address global problems such as rapid population growth, extreme poverty, violent conflict, climate change and other large-scale catastrophic challenges. A $5 million prize will be awarded for the best idea.

The Global Challenges Foundation works to construct a deeper understanding of global risks to humankind and methods to deal with them. Through the creation of a platform that draws together great thinkers from every field, the foundation pushes for international cooperation to build acceptable living conditions for the future.

Founder and chairman of the Global Challenges Foundation, Laszlo Szombatfalvy, spoke about the purpose of the challenge in a letter, saying that, “The greatest threats we face today transcend national boundaries; they therefore need to be addressed jointly by all countries based on an increased realization of our mutual dependence… I firmly believe that human ingenuity, having brought us this far, will also manage to find solutions to them.”

Entrants are judged by academic experts in a panel and an international jury that decide on the entry that meet the eight criteria of core values, decision-making capacity, effectiveness, resources and financing, trust and insight, flexibility, protection against the abuse of power, and accountability. Beyond the $5 million prize, the Global Challenges Foundation supports the winning ideas through implementation.
