Woman Graduating from School

Fostering educational opportunities for young women interested in a STEM career (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), nonprofit 1,000 Dreams Fund (1DF) has joined with HARMAN, a Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. subsidiary, for the fourth year of its scholarship grant program supporting future women tech leaders.

The $60,000 in awarded scholarships is double the amount of last year’s program. The 40 selected applicants will each receive a $1500 grant, a JBL product from Samsung, and career coaching from a HARMAN executive. The student recipients will also be given guidance on how to build their resume skills and an opportunity to interview for employment at global technologies leader HARMAN.

The annual New Face of Tech Scholarship Program was created to improve gender equality in tech industries. These organizations have joined to give encouragement and opportunity to women early in their careers by positioning them to take on leading roles. This initiative is their way to counter women being significantly underrepresented in tech, and in particular, leadership positions. Currently women only make up 16% of managers and just 3% of CEOs in the global information technology industry.

“The unique times we currently face simply accentuate the already critical need to grow the pipeline of women entering the STEM fields. The mission of 1,000 Dreams Fund aligns with the Harman Inspired vision of empowering the next generation through access to education,” said Annette DiBenedetto, Global Lead, Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Engagement at HARMAN.

The organizations are looking for individuals who have demonstrated a passion for a tech career and are able to clearly describe how winning a scholarship would move their dream forward. Students are asked to provide a photo demonstrating how they are the “New Face of Tech” and to describe how they will use the grant funding to pursue their dream. The application period ends November 13, 2020 and those interested should apply to 1000dreamsfund.org/apply/newfaceoftech2020.

1000dreamsfund has awarded over $200,000 in grants since its founding in late 2015, becoming one of a growing number of organizations focusing on diversity. Funds cover a range of essentials for the next generation of women tech leaders from study abroad, classroom tech devices, and travel expenses for conferences and seminars.
