Launched in September of this year, startup wellness company Sugarbreak is tackling sugar consumption and blood sugar levels with the introduction of a natural sugar alternative product. This benefit corporation’s mission is to improve public health—backed by investors SKAGEN Conscience Capital (Method), Bronze (LendUp), BBG Ventures (LOLA) and Sorven Capital that share the venture’s vision and social goals.
With $3 million raised Sugarbreak’s eyes are set on 2021 when they will be expanding the availability of their products and conducting further innovative product development. The company wants to build on their introductory product line that is made from all natural herbal ingredients and backed by over 20 ingredient clinical studies.
Sugarbreak CEO and co-founder Scarlett Leung recognizes the important backing her venture has received from venture capital firms who are sincerely interested in startups that can bring a benefit to society. She states, “Skagen Conscience Capital is a values driven family office that seeks to invest for positive impact, BBG Ventures is a VC fund leading investments in female-founded startups addressing fundamental issues in the lives of today’s more diverse, conscious and connected consumer, and Bronze invests in businesses that transform disparity into prosperity for Eastside communities.”
A very big strength of Sugarbreak is the founding team that is comprised of seasoned entrepreneurs: CEO Leung in Trelis Health, Adam Lowry in Ripple Foods & Method Products, Kyle Heller in VMG Creative and Luke Raymond in VMG Creative. They achieved the launch of a direct-to-consumer product line, no prescription necessary, called: Resist, Stabilize, and Reduce.
“Sugarbreak stood out to us because they are female-founded and are addressing a huge health issue the 99% is facing in America — high blood sugar,” said Nisha Dua, General Partner and Co-Founder of BBG Ventures. Dua touts the science backed products that will empower individuals to be proactive in managing their health.
“We only invest when a company’s product or service drives positive impact. Sugarbreak is addressing a monumental health crisis with diabetes and obesity highlighted further by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Stephen DeBerry from Bronze. He foresees that these readily affordable products will have a significant impact on marginalized communities that have been disproportionately affected by diabetes and COVID-19.
