The city of Newark is partnering with Mars Wrigley Confectionary U.S, a company with headquarters and a long history in Newark, to spearhead an initiative to make the city more sustainable by opening up a branch of the national non-profit organization, Keep America Beautiful. With more than 600 affiliates across the U.S, the company provides programming that improves neighborhoods and cleans up cities, ensuring civilians have a better living space.

Keep America Beautiful-Newark plans to follow a tri-sector model in which the business community, local government, and citizens work together to beautify the city in an environmentally friendly and economically viable way. Previous programs that the organization implemented, using the 3.4 million volunteers in their network, have reduced litter, improved public spaces, and planted more trees and flowers.

The branch in Newark plans to focus on reducing littering around the city and improving recycling. In April, Keep America Beautiful-Newark will hold a Great American Cleanup to meet these goals and, in November, the city will participate in America Recycles Day, a day dedicated to educating and promoting the importance of recycling.

“Through our many partnerships across the city, we will bring programs and resources to help keep Newark clean, safe, healthy and beautiful,” said Malkia King, founding executive director of Keep America Beautiful-Newark.
