CPE Media Analytics was pleased to report the sizzling pace of Canadian Venture Capital disbursements in the first half of 2019. It included 264 financings completed, with $2.9 billion in total that was led by a $286 million deal from Sonder Canada. Large funding deals were significant in this period, with eight deals raising $910 million that accounted for 30% of the half’s total disbursements.

“Barring a total collapse in the second half, Canadian VC disbursements are on track to go past the $5 billion mark for the first time since 2000,” said CPE Media Inc. President, Ted Liu. “As US and foreign investors continue to play a very important role in the Canadian Venture Capital ecosystem, CPE Media Analytics is proud to release the first ever analysis sorted by US and foreign investors.”

This information comes from CPE Media’s Canadian Venture Capital Report, breaking down H1 2019 by several key factors. When it comes to the sources of funding Canadian ventures, the U.S. accounted for 47%, with 43% from Canada and 10% from other foreign sources. Ontario pulled 59% of US investments all on its own, accounting for 28% of total Canadian disbursements. Conversely, America and other foreign investors were least interested in Western Canada.

Private VC funds, regardless of their source, came in as the top investor type at 46%. Corporate sources, in second place, only accounted 19% by comparison. In third place are Family Offices with 9%, and sharing fifth are Angels and Governments with 6% each.
