Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business recently announced that on February 24-25, 2017, the sixth annual Baylor New Venture Competition will be held at the University’s Waco, Texas campus. The Competition aims to promote the most innovative and forwarding-thinking entrepreneurs and their startup ideas.
Accredited college and university students are eligible to apply. Cash prizes total $144,000; this amount combined with in-kind awards bring the award total to over $200,000. The grand prize offered is worth $60,000 while the second prize is $35,000 and the third is $20,000. Additional prizes will be given to participants outside of the 1st to 3rd place winners. The deadline to enter the competition will be November 6, 2016.
According to its website, anonymous donor underwrites the competition. Dell, the title sponsor, will give a $2,500 prize to one of the finalists.
This competition centers around business planning and speed pitching from student entrepreneurs and small businesses. In addition to the prizes, students who compete receive feedback from accomplished business executives and investors that will assist them in turning their ideas into feasible concepts and potentially fundable ventures.
2016’s winners were Brandon Sweeney and Blake Teipel of the small business TriFusion Devices. Both Sweeney and Teipel are students at Texas A&M University and received last year’s grand prize of $50,000. TriFusion Devices is a company of patent-pending 3D printing technologies. Second prize 2016 winner was Rhizofeed LLC and third prizewinner was VasoCorp, which also won the Able Award. Parking Grid Technologies won the Dell Award.
