AliveCor announced on July 19th a partnership with Mayo Clinic combining AliveCor’s experience with artificial intelligence and Mayo Clinic’s algorithms for a new method of screening for long QT syndrome (LQTS). LQTS is both inherited and acquired, placing 160,000 people in America at risk from the inherited form and 3,000 – 4,000 sudden deaths because of LQTS occurring annually in American young adults and children.

AliveCor, Inc. has experience in proactive cardiac care, with products like Kardia Mobile providing EGC readings to consumers globally, and Kardia Pro leveraging AI technology to enable doctors to detect atrial fibrillation in patients. Through the Mayo Clinic collaboration and investments from the spring in 2017 totaling $30 million, new techniques and methods for preventative medicine are being developed for Kardia Mobile allowing instant results outside of a doctor’s office.

Vic Gundotra, AliveCor CEO, gave their thoughts on the partnership in a press release, saying that, “AliveCor’s patented artificial intelligence technology, algorithms and millions of ECGs, paired with Mayo Clinic’s extensive data and world-leading clinical expertise will mean enhanced safety and decreased risk for many. This new technology could one day allow pharmacists, coaches and others to actively screen for and prevent sudden cardiac deaths.”

The proposed tool enables individuals to practice preventative medicine on a scale not possible through doctors alone. Mayo Clinic plans to use any revenue from the project to further its mission in research, education, and patient care.
