The Luis Villalobos Award has chosen RetroSense Therpeutics LLC., a private biopharmaceutical company, as a finalist demonstrating startup innovation and ingenuity. The winner of the award will be announced at this year’s Angel Capital Association Summit in San Diego on April 15.

ACA is the leading professional and trade association that helps accredited angel investors and portfolio companies in high-growth, early-stage ventures, providing professional development, public policy advocacy and resources to its members.

The two-day ACA Summit from April 14-16 finds its home this year in San Diego, named by Forbes as The Best Place for Startups in the United State in 2014, according to aca.org. It brings together top angels, accredited platforms, angel groups and industry experts to connect with hopeful entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs attending this year’s summit will have to opportunity to meet 700 angel peers, spend one-on-one time with investors and interact with ACA’s 12,000 members from across North America.

RetroSense Therapeutics is being recognized for its development of a “first-in-class gene therapy application of optogenetics” designed to bring sight to those living with blindness as a result of retinitis pigmentosa, according to a press release. RetroSense is the first to work toward a solution for RP-induced blindness, which currently has no FDA-approved drugs on the market.

Recently, RetroSense secured $6 million in Series A financing in an angel-led round with participation from the U.S. and overseas.
