With data analytics provider Consumer Edge as a new partner, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz released its 2023 a16z Marketplace 100 for the fourth year. The rankings show the largest consumer-facing marketplaces that are hosted by startups and private companies and is based on annual gross merchandise volume (GMV).
This year’s Marketplace 100 is the first post pandemic report, offering greater clarity as to where trends are occurring for those ranked. Looking to the future, focus is on the marketplaces that are rising in each of their respective categories that they may a prominent role in the future. This year the 100 includes about three dozen new listings of marketplaces, ranging from refurbished electronics, precious metals, sustainably raised meat and others.
With Consumer Edge onboard, the global review also includes insight on consumer spending behavior. While a ranking satisfies an understandable interest as to where one marketplace stands relative to others, the rankings also offer insight about changing consumer behaviors.
Top 10 Marketplaces and their Categories:
- Instacart Groceries
- Valve Games
- viagogo Tickets
- SEAT GEEK Tickets
- TURO Transportation
- StockX Streetwear
- ROCKAUTO Automotive
- GOAT Streetwear

Included in Accenture’s ranking report is a U.S. map showing the dispersion of the marketplace companies in their home states, as well as a side bar for those internationally based.
Eleven are located in California with six in and around Silicon Valley and five in the Los Angels area. Possibly, surprising to some, are the 25 plus located in New York City and Brooklyn.
Seven countries are represented that includes: Germany (2), Canada (2), Australia (1), France (2), Great Britain (2), Austria (1) and China (1).
The report highlights shifting consumer behaviors such as more ticketing companies in the ranking, eight in total, which may have had a post-pandemic burst—that may eventually slow. Also, there are more marketplaces such as auto repairs versus new car purchases and online mental health companies that help patients navigate insurance as well as some who help patients find in-network providers.
Most notable is that only four companies moved forward via IPO, SPAC, or acquisition versus nineteen the prior year. The report attributes this to volatile markets putting pressure on valuations.
The four that had exits are:
Wag: a dog walking marketplace and the car sharing platform Getaround went public via a SPAC, while the trading card marketplace TCGPlayer was bought by eBay and the mobile mechanic service YourMechanic was acquired by Wrench.
Curated marketplaces are broken out into categories: travel, shopping, food, pets and wedding. One of the more interesting statistics is Amazon’s increase in fees over the past six years, rising from 35% to 52%, as a percentage of product price.
