Lemelson-MIT Prize Awarded to MIT Professor Ramesh Raskar

On September 13, 2016 Ramesh Raskar, professor of Media Arts and Science at MIT, became the recipient of the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize. This prize is offered to mid-career professionals and inventors who impact the world positively through tech innovation.

Ramesh Raskar is an inventor and innovator who has contributed significantly to the field of imaging, eye care, while also working to create platforms for inventors around the world to connect and collaborate.

In 2012 he created Femto-photography, a new form of photography that utilizes fast imaging to capture a slow-motion movement of light by taking one trillion frames per second. The purpose of this technology is to see around corners and make visible what is out of sight. This technology can prevent car accidents caused by blind spots or locate survivors that need to be rescued and etc.

He also cofounded Eye-Netra, an innovative eye care company that seeks to provide low-cost eye care globally.  Eye-Netra provides low-cost hand-held devices that can be used to calculate a prescription for eye glasses very quickly. Eye-Netra seeks to create affordable, time saving eye-care that is accessible anywhere in the world.

In addition to being a professor and tech inventor, Ramesh Raskar is a pioneer in the inventors’ community. His work includes creating platforms that expand global connectivity among inventors. He intends to use a portion of the money granted in this award to create such platforms.
